The Messiness of Well-Being

If we are lucky when we start pulling a ball of string apart it will sometimes pull apart really easily or it will knot and tangle causing frustration to the point where we ball it back up and throw it back in the cupboard for another day when we have more patience to untangle it. Well-being can have a similar vibe and here is why.

The Complexities

The reality is well-being is complex and comprehensive. It's not linear, it can be vague and confusing for some.  Well-being is a multi-faceted construct that can be difficult to measure. In education, systems are asking schools to make it measurable and make well-being part of how they do business within a school setting. In some cases, it's a little bit of this and a little bit of that.

What we do know

A little bit of this and a little bit of that can equate to the various aspects of well-being. We do know that it is not just  Wellness, not Social & Emotional Learning and Mental Health or spirituality. It is various aspects of these components that make up the term well-being.

  • Wellness is the aspect of our physical health.

  • Social & Emotional learning is how we develop positive relationships with self and others.

  • Mental Health- cognitive, social, and emotional

  • Spiritual health- your values and beliefs

So by now, you might be saying, HUH? Isn't there a little bit of everything in all aspects of these concepts? The answer is yes there is, and that is why it can be messy. When we blend all of these aspects together, we are safe to say that we are practicing well-being. It is a holistic approach that brings all aspects of self together. We know that we are not just our mind or our body or our spirit, we are comprised of all of them. To me, well-being is cyclical and forever changing.

Know that we are always 1 experience away from a better life.
